NOVACO True Story

At 14, Margaret was given in an arranged marriage. He was 44. She tried to be a good wife. When she had her first son, her husband began to punish her for everything she did. He forbade her from visiting family or making friends. Her family would not help. After her second son the abuse increased. She ran away, twice, he brought her back and each time the abuse worsened. Her husband told her she would never see her children if she left again. He kept her locked in the basement by day, for several years. Her older son began to beg for her release. When she was finally allowed out, Margaret took sleeping pills to escape the abuse.

NOVACO True StoryMargaret's son called an ambulance when mom would not wake up. She survived and when the doctors released her, Margaret stole her sons and went straight to a shelter the doctors had told her about. She met total strangers who cared about her family and told her she did not have to live with abuse.

She then came to the NOVACO Safe Housing program, offering childcare for the boys, an education to help her learn to earn a living and counseling to overcome the trauma of abuse. The boys felt safe and Margaret began to become what she states is 'a real person' instead of an empty shell.

Physical abuse is what everyone thinks of first to define abuse, but mental abuse leaves scars on the inside. Many NOVACO families become who they were meant to be, when they are given the opportunity to make their own decisions and start their new life.

NOVACO offers safe housing to survivors of abuse, re-starting lives to end the cycle of abuse.

See guidelines below and thank you very much for your support.
